How to remove toilet limescale and have it ‘looking as good as new’

When guests come over, there are usually two areas that are judged the most harshly – the bathroom and kitchen.

While the rest of the house may look neat and tidy, all that cleaning up could be in vain if the bathroom looks grubby.

If you find that the toilet rim still looks gross no matter how many times you circle around toilet cleaner, then it could be time to seek expert advice.

Luckily, here at Express.co.uk, we’ve sought the professional advice of plumbing and bathroom expert Peter Clayton from Trade Plumbing.

“I recommend using [white] vinegar to break down and soften the limescale,” said Clayton.

“Pour or wipe a healthy amount of white vinegar under the rim of your toilet and let it sit for two to three hours,” he advised.

“Then take your toilet brush and scrub under the rim. Once the dirt has been removed flush your toilet and it should be left looking as good as new.”

In agreement is James Roberts, the director of luxury bathroom supplier, Sanctuary Bathrooms.

Roberts recommended leaving 250ml of vinegar to sit in the toilet bowl overnight, then to “sprinkle baking soda in the toilet, scrub with a vinegar-dipped brush, [and] repeat if necessary”.

Henrique Conceicao, the area manager at Total Clean, gave step-by-step instructions on how best to clean a toilet to make it all sparkly clean.

“Before deep cleaning a toilet, you should remove any items around it and apply a toilet cleaner to the bowl,” said Conceicao.

“Let it sit for at least 15 minutes to loosen the grime. Scrub the bowl using a toilet brush, paying special attention to the waterline and the toilet rim.

“Use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to tackle tough stains.” Conceicao added: “Wipe down the outside of the toilet with a disinfectant cleaner.

“On average, deep cleaning a toilet should take approximately 30 minutes.”

Conceicao advised: “Regular cleaning is the key to maintaining a hygienic toilet. Aim to clean it out at least once a week to prevent a buildup of grime and bacteria.”|
