Oliver Bearman fumes ‘I’m an idiot’ after crashing into wall at Azerbaijan Grand Prix | F1 | Sport

Oliver Bearman was left incensed during FP3 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after crashing into the Turn One wall following a clumsy incident.

The Brit is making his second Grand Prix appearance of the season after replacing Carlos Sainz for Ferrari at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix when the Spaniard was diagnosed with appendicitis.

Bearman replaced Kevin Magnussen for the weekend in Baku after the Dane picked up a one-race suspension for accumulating 12 penalty points on his FIA super license. However, his time in Azerbaijan didn’t start in an ideal manner.

After putting in strong FP1 and FP2 sessions, Bearman’s weekend derailed in FP3. After overshooting the approach to Turn One, the Brit decided to back out of the move but made the call too late.

With his trajectory already set, Bearman barrelled towards the barriers and despite hooking the car to the right towards the run-off area at the last moment, he was unable to avoid contact.

Bearman collided with the wall, causing significant damage to the front-left of his VF-24 machine. When contacted by his race engineer on the radio, the teenager fumed: “I’m such an idiot.”

The Ferrari academy prospect wasn’t the only driver to struggle across the free practice sessions in Baku. Both Franco Colapinto and Charles Leclerc crashed out on Friday, bringing out red flags for their own respective incidents.

For team principal Ayao Komatsu, the attention immediately turned to getting his driver ready for qualifying later in the day and rebuilding his confidence after Bearman’s first F1 crash.

The Essex-born racer needs to be on the pace in Baku this weekend with Haas wrapped up in an intense battle with VCARB for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship standings.
