Oscar Piastri has given his verdict on his Hungarian Grand Prix victory after releasing a heart-warming video on social media. The McLaren ace claimed his first Grand Prix win after team-mate Lando Norris was told by team chiefs to let the Australian overtake him when he was leading.
Piastri started the race behind Norris but passed his team-mate on Turn One and held his lead through the first round of pit stops.
The Australian later dropped behind Norris due to McLaren’s second pit stop strategy, with team chiefs then telling the Briton to allow Piastri to overtake and reclaim the lead.
Norris initially questioned the decision as he sensed a second race victory of the season. But he eventually conceded the lead, with Piastri crossing the chequered flag in first position.
And a day after the enthralling race, Piastri released a heartwarming video on X: “Hey, everyone, so [we’re] 24 hours on from a pretty epic moment in my career so far.n
“So I just wanted to post a quick video saying thank you for all the support, firstly to everyone who was there at the track – I think I said after the race but there were a lot of Aussie flags out there – so thanks for all your support from Down Under.
“Thanks to everyone that cheered me on as well, it was pretty special to be a part of that. And yeah, I think it’s time to sink in a little bit more. It’s kind of hard to take in in the moment to just realise what you’ve accomplished and how long you’ve been waiting for that moment – like I said it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid.
“It’s starting to sink in a little bit more and I’m just very, very happy. So we’ll go again this week and try and get the second one on the board. Thank you for all the support and keep it coming.
“One race win up and an extra five euros to the fan – you know who you are – you won’t have to give me five euros every weekend. So thank you very much everyone, let’s go again this week.”
Norris was clearly disappointed with the chain of events that saw him finish in second position at the Hungaroring track. And after the race he explained: “It’s not because strategically something’s really happened and you’re kind of just letting someone pass or something’s going that way. It’s that I shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.
“I shouldn’t have been given that hope of ‘I’m here. I’m leading a race.’ So I don’t think it’s a fair thing. Of course, we’re going to discuss it and there’s going to be times maybe in the future where things are like that.
“But if Oscar has led the whole race, I don’t want him just to… it’s not fair and I don’t think that’s how it should work, that he should just let me pass for me to win because I’m fighting for a championship.”
