Rubondo Island has been described as a hidden gem in the heart of Lake Victoria by a travel expert.

The island is in Tanzania and offers tourists a unique experience in the middle of Africa’s largest lake.

It’s known for its incredible wildlife and stunning scenery and gives tourists a chance to explore a national park off the beaten path.

Wayne Kask, a travel expert and the founder of Discover West Central Florida, spoke exclusively to the Express about this hidden gem.

He said: “Africa has numerous amazing gems, but one is on the top of my list. Nestled in the immense expanse of Lake Victoria sits Tanzania’s hidden gem, Rubondo Island.

“This isolated island provides a haven for wildlife, especially the chimpanzees who roam its woodlands, as well as for tourists.”

Kask also highlighted the island’s appeal to nature lovers and those looking for a peaceful getaway.

He said: “Nature and peace coexist there, making it the perfect getaway from the daily grind.

“The island’s untouched beauty makes it a perfect spot for those looking to connect with the natural world.

“Guided nature walks allow visitors to explore the diverse flora and fauna, offering glimpses of rare species in their natural habitats.”

Anyone who visits Rubondo can also enjoy boat safaris on the lake. Kask said: “Boat safaris offer another perspective, as you drift across the serene waters, surrounded by the island’s lush greenery and the calls of its wild inhabitants.”

The island is home to a range of wildlife, including chimpanzees, elephants, hippos and crocodiles, as well as over 300 bird species.

For those looking for an immersive experience, the island’s Chimpanzee Habituation Experience allows tourists to see chimpanzees up close in their natural habitat, although sightings aren’t guaranteed.

What’s more, Rubondo Island’s remote location makes it a truly unique destination.

Kask described it as “not just about observation; it’s about immersion”. He added: “The island invites you to experience its quietude, where the only sounds you hear are those of nature itself. It’s a retreat into simplicity and calm, where the modern world feels worlds away.”

As far as getting there is concerned, with its own airstrip, Rubondo Island is accessible by plane from other parts of Tanzania and even from Kigali, Rwanda.
