The Eiffel Tower in Paris is on fire.

The blaze is understood to be burning in the elevator shaft between the first and second floor of the tower. 

Frontières reported at 10.35am that a fire is underway at the tower.

The monument had just been evacuated, and an intervention company established a perimeter. It is thought that around 1,200 people had to be moved away.

People have said that the attarction is closed while an operation is underway to put out the blaze.

Firefighters were originally said to have been struggling to get to the source of the fire.
