Australian teenage star Emerson Jones received a wildcard into the main draw after finishing runner-up in the junior girls event 12 months ago.
And the 16-year-old was given a brutal draw, facing sixth seed and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina needed just 53 minutes to earn a 6-1 6-1 victory as Australian commentators were stunned.
“Come on, she’s only 16,” Sam Smith joked on Channel Nine. “Welcome to the big time, Emerson. There won’t be many more heavy servers than this, you might as well start at the top. This is unreal.”
Afterwards, Rybakina was full of praise on the former junior No. 1.
“Very young, very talented, great future ahead of her,” she said before offering some advice.
“Just to try to work hard, listen to her team, because I think she has great support and plenty of opportunities to play with great players.”
