Daniil Medvedev skips Australian Open press conference after crushing 3am defeat | Tennis | Sport

Daniil Medvedev opted out of his Australian Open press conference after crashing out in the second round.

Medvedev was coming up against teenager Learner Tien in his round-two clash but the Russian ace suffered a shock exit at the hands of the American.

Tien established an early lead in the contest by winning the first two sets, only for Medvedev to battle back and level things up at 2-2.

In the second of those two sets, Medvedev despatched Tien 6-1 with it looking like the 2021 US Open champion would go on and triumph in the third.

It didn’t prove the case though, as Tien was the one who took the deciding set during an epic 7-6 (10-7) tiebreaker.

Given the match went all the way to a seventh set, proceedings down under didn’t wrap up until gone 3am local time.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Medvedev, who was likely just wanting to return to his bed, decided to skip his pre-planned press conference.

Unsurprisingly, Tien was happy to front up to the cameras after securing the biggest win of his fledgling career.

He said on court after the victory: “I was definitely hoping it wasn’t going to a fifth-set breaker but either way I’m just really happy to get the win.

“I know I made it a lot harder than what it could have been but, you know, whatever.”

On his mid-match wobble that let Medvedev back into the match, he added: “Losing the third [set] was tough after playing for that long. I had a match point so that was a little disappointing to see a fourth [set].

“In the fourth set I just had to pee so bad, so I was trying to finish it up fairly quick.

“I also wanted to start the fifth [set] serving first so I scrapped out that game at 0-5 and it all worked out.”

Despite only sticking around for two matches, Medvedev certainly left his mark on the Melbourne showpiece.

Midway through his opening-round match with Kasidit Samrej, the 28-year-old launched a full-scale attack on the net, repeatedly smashing his racket into it after losing a point against the 23-year-old.

His exit will please tennis icon Boris Becker, who was less-than-pleased with Medvedev’s behaviour. Speaking on ‘Matchball Becker’ on Eurosport Germany, Becker said: “He’s just become a father for the second time, so he should have a bit more control over himself.

“But that’s how we know him. He’s a hothead. It’s very entertaining for us, but not good for the tournament. I’m curious to see how much of a fine he’ll have to pay.”
