Johnny Herbert lands ‘hugely exciting’ new job 24 hours after FIA axe | F1 | Sport

Johnny Herbert has been announced as a global brand ambassador for Lola Cars, just one day after his exit from the FIA was confirmed.

The three-time Grand Prix winner served as an FIA steward throughout the 2024 season, but a series of interviews with betting companies raised concerns about clashing responsibilities.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the FIA said: “It is with regret that we announce today that Johnny Herbert will no longer fulfil the position of F1 driver steward for the FIA. Johnny is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role.

“However, after discussion, it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible. We thank him for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Just one day after his dismissal, Herbert has landed a new role. On Thursday, Lola Cars announced that the former Benetton and Jaguar F1 star has joined as a global brand ambassador.

Herbert will ‘bring his interdisciplinary expertise’ to the company as they head into the 2025 Formula E season while also playing a role in ‘partnerships and business development’, working with ‘sponsors and clients’.

“It’s hugely exciting to be involved with an iconic and successful championship-winning marque like Lola,” he said. “Lola has always been a big part of the motorsport world and, having grown up with Lolas around me in Formula Ford, sportscars and F1, joining the team for this next chapter feels like the perfect fit.

“I look forward to working with Lola and its partners, opening doors for the brand and helping contribute not only to the renewed success of such a storied name but to the sustainable future of top-tier motorsport as well.”

Herbert’s new role means that all parties will be happy, given that, according to a GPblog report, Red Bull were one of two teams who protested the Brit’s media commitments during the latter stages of the 2024 campaign.
