Wrexham star James McClean was allegedly involved in an altercation with a fan who was later ejected during a feisty clash between the Welsh side and Stockport County. McClean was heavily involved in a controversial incident which saw Wrexham claim an important three points in their quest for promotion from League One.
Captain McClean was heading towards the Racecourse Ground tunnel when he was confronted by an angry fan. The individual allegedly aimed a punch at the Republic of Ireland international. Police and stewards intervened and it has been claimed that the person was ejected from the stadium.
Express Sport have contacted Wrexham and North Wales Police for comment.
On the pitch, Wrexham secured a precious three points in their search for automatic promotion to the Championship. The Red Dragons entered Saturday’s clash above promotion rivals Stockport in the table and took the lead via a controversial first-half goal.
In a hugely contentious moment, McClean headed the ball against Ibou Touray’s arm from close range in the penalty area and while the referee initially waved play on, after a lengthy consultation with his assistant, a spot-kick was awarded. Stockport’s players and fans were furious over the decision, which could have huge rammifications in the battle for promotion to the Championship.
Jay Rodriguez, once of Premier League sides Southampton and Burnley, stepped up to take the penalty and while the initial effort was saved, the striker was on hand to sweep home the rebound. The 35-year-old’s goal ended a 10-game wait for his first Wrexham strike, having joined from Burnley in January.
Wrexham’s win elevates them into the automatic promotion spots, sitting behind runaway League One leaders Birmingham. Phil Parkinson’s side are three points clear of third-placed Wycombe, who have a game in hand.
Stockport, who are fifth, remain strong contenders to finish in the play-offs despite their first defeat in five matches. Eleven yellow cards were shown and Stockport defender Brad Hills was sent off in the 80th minute after collecting a second booking.
Parkinson said afterwards: “It was always going to be a feisty encounter because there’s now an edge to this fixture.
“But I think we deserved it and I’m delighted for Jay that he got his goal. He’s worked tirelessly for the team and he deserved that moment but in terms of spirit, togetherness, grit and the determination required to engage at this stage of the season, it was all out there for us.”
