A portrait of President Donald Trump, which he branded “truly the worst”, will be taken down in Colorado’s State Capitol building, officials have said. The US president claimed the portrait by Sarah Boardman which was unveiled in the Denver rotunda’s gallery of presidents in 2019 was “purposefully distorted”.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump shared an image of the portrait and complained about the painting. He said: “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado, in the State Capitol, put up by the Governor, along with all other Presidents, was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before.”
He said that a portrait by Boardman of President Obama looked “wonderful” but “the one on me is truly the worst”.
He added that people in Colorado had written to him to complain about it to him, Mr Trump’s portrait by Boardman has been hanging in the State Capitol since 2019. It is unclear what sparked Mr Trump’s complaint on Sunday night.
Trump also criticised Boardman saying: “She must have lost her talent as she got older.”
In reponse Boardman said when the portrait was unveiled that she was not trying to make a political comment and wanted the president to have his place in history.
House Democrats said in a statement on Monday evening that the oil painting that attracted Mr Trump’s criticism would be taken down at the request of Republican leaders in the legislature.
Senate minority leader Paul Lundeen, a Republican, said that he requested for Trump’s portrait to be taken down and replaced by one “that depicts his contemporary likeness”.
“If the GOP (Republican Party) wants to spend time and money on which portrait of Trump hangs in the capitol, then that’s up to them,” the Democrats said.
Liberal and anti-Trump user have mocked the president’s reaction on social media.
Former Republican attorney Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of the liberal news website MeidasTouch Network, wrote on X that Trump was “the most fragile, sensitive snowflake in history”.
Whilst social media account named Republicans Against Trump called him “a petty, insecure baby”.
