Dame Maggie Smith’s quiet life in village where average home fetches £686k

Dame Maggie Smith, 89, has had an extensive stage and screen career that has spanned an impressive seven decades.

The actress has won a plethora of awards during her career including two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award.

Some of her most famous roles include her role as Violet Crawley in the British period drama Downton Abbey and Miss Shepherd in Lady in the Van.

Away from the screen, Dame Maggie resides in a pretty West Sussex village called Pulborough which is home to just 5,000 people.

The stunning little rural village has panoramic views across the Arun Valley to the South Downs and buildings from the Saxon, Tudor and Georgian eras.

The large village is also just 41 miles from London making it an ideal spot for commuters.

Dame Maggie owns a five-bedroom 15th-century property in the village which she bought with her late husband Beverley Cross in 1981.

The home is expansive with three barns, a vineyard, a stable and an orchard.

The actress has kept her private life under wraps but has been spotted shopping in the nearby town of Storrington.

Being in close proximity to London and incredibly pretty, homes in Pulborough don’t come cheap.

According to Rightmove, homes in Pulborough had an overall average price of £686,581 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Pulborough during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £830,389.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £517,100, with terraced properties fetching £384,177.

Overall, sold prices in Pulborough over the last year were 10 percent up on the previous year and nine percent up on the 2021 peak of £627,021.
