Trend watch: Denim shirts | Fashion

On this season’s runways, designers have continued to have a pared-back approach to everyday dressing. As well as double-denim looks, denim shirts were layered over T-shirts, tucked in and buttoned up under an oversized blazer, or teamed with tailored trousers to create a smart-casual option. Quiet luxury has put elevated basics back on the map and it’s a look easily achieved on the high street. Gap’s western snap-fastening shirt (£40) looks great tucked into a pair of their high-waisted vintage slim jeans (£40).

Levi’s Teodra shirt (£75) has classic western yoke detailing, while its Carinna frilled style (£75) looks as good with wide-leg jeans or tucked into a denim midi skirt. Balance proportions with All Saints’ oversized shirt (2, below) paired with slim-leg jeans. You don’t have to limit denim to the classic mid-blue. Look out for Arket’s greige smock cut (1, below), which comes with a matching skirt (£67) or try With Nothing Underneath’s new offwhite version of their sell-out blue denim shirt (4, below), which you can opt to monogram for an extra chic flourish. For a truly authentic denim shirt, vintage stores can be very rewarding. Seek out brands such as Lee and Wrangler, and try online preloved edits for designer bargains.

At the time of writing Asos Marketplace had a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt (£18) and a chambray Thomas Burberry style (£45), while depop.com had multiple Levi’s options listed. Don’t forget to check the men’s listings as well, and be sure to size down accordingly. Finish your denim look with simple gold or silver jewellery, such as hoop earrings, a single chain necklace or a signet ring.
