Best used family SUVs to buy for £10,000 that are stylish yet cheap to run

For motorists looking to get behind the wheel of a trendy yet practical used family car for a very fair price, SUVs offer some of the best value on the market.

Renault Kadjar

Whilst the name may sound a bit silly, the Renault Kadjar is a good choice for motorists who want a crossover that features a good mix of style and practicality.

Built from 2015 to 2022, the Kadjar is based on the same platform as the best-selling Nissan Qashqai but features Renault’s distinctive styling cues, including a large, chromed badge on the front and a swooping bonnet line.

A £10,000 budget can comfortably get motorists a low-mileage example, and a choice between a 1.2 turbocharged petrol or a 1.5 diesel.

Suzuki Vitara

Drivers looking for one of the most reliable SUVs that £10,000 can buy should consider the fourth-generation Suzuki Vitara.

Still in production today, reliability surveys have found that Vitara owners are very happy with their car, with many stating that they find it fun to drive and spacious.

Whilst some of the used examples feature a buzzy 1.0 turbocharged petrol engine, the more common 1.6 offers slightly better fuel economy, averaging 53.3 miles per gallon.

Kia Sportage

Another good choice for a £10,000 used car that can stand up to everyday life is the fourth-generation Kia Sportage, built from 2017 to 2022.

A strong seller throughout its time on the UK market, the Sportage features fairly traditional, and largely reliable, mechanicals under an attractive skin.

Whilst this means that some engines are quite thirsty in comparison to competitors, most models are well-equipped, with all Sportages featuring air conditioning, a reversing camera and a seven-inch touchscreen.

BMW X1

Finally, whilst few motorists buy a car on a £10,000 budget to impress the neighbours, those looking for something that is relatively luxurious can get behind the wheel of a second-generation BMW X1.

The smallest SUV in the BMW range, the X1 quickly received a good reputation for build quality and driving style, even if some found it to be slightly noisier than competitors.

Fitted with the 2.0 diesel engine, the SUV is also a fairly reliable model and, in typical BMW fashion, can accelerate from 0-60mph in under 10 seconds.
