Peace lilies will ‘flower again’ if given 1 kitchen scrap during autumn

Peace lilies are known for their beautiful white spathes, but they do brown and wilt away throughout summer.

While some people may struggle to get their peace lily houseplant to ever rebloom, one gardening enthusiast has shared his top tips to make sure yours does this autumn.

“Giving the plant as much natural indirect light as possible is one of the main things this plant needs to send out flowers.”

The gardening guru, owner of the YouTube channel Sheffield Made Plants, clarified that peace lily houseplants require at least six hours of daylight.

Those in a Northern hemisphere are advised to put their peace lily on an east-facing window.

Adequate amount of daylight means the plant is able to “effectively photosynthesis and store energy to send out flowers”.

Watering your peace lily correctly will also impact its ability to reflower, he added.

This could mean watering your peace lily once per week, but the key is to make sure the soil is dry before watering the plant.

Underwatering or overwatering your peace lily will lead to a stressed out plant that will not reflower.

During growing season, such as autumn, peace lilies love to be fed with a liquid fertiliser.

The expert elaborated: “I feed my peace lily with a liquid fertiliser at least once a month in the growing season.

“This helps to keep the foliage green and gives it the nutrients it needs to flower.”

One nutrient that is particularly important is potassium, which is where his top hack comes into play.

One kitchen scrap the expert recommends is banana, which he cuts up finely and adds to the soil of the plant.

“This gives the plant a little boost in potassium,” he said. As long as the plant has enough light, and is watered and fertilised correctly, it should rebloom.

He added: “It’s important if you want your plant to bloom like it does in the wild, try not to allow the temperature in your house to drop below 15C.”

By following all of the gardening enthusiast’s top tips, including the banana kitchen scrap, the peace lily should “flower again”.
