A popular European airport is working on a huge expansion plan worth £1.1 billion that will open a new “pier” by 2027. Schipol Airport in Amsterdam is also said to be opening Pier A as a part of the massive construction project.

Once opened, the new building will be spread across three floors with eight narrowbody and widebody gates. The building will also house border control facilities and retail outlets.

The latest expansion is likely to boost the activity at the airport, believes experts at the Travel and Tour World.

They wrote: “As one of Europe’s major hub airports, any improvements at Schiphol will enhance the travel experience for millions of passengers worldwide.

“The new facilities and gates will likely increase the airport’s capacity, reducing congestion and potentially improving the efficiency of airline operations.”

According to the reports, the project was initially planned for 2012, however, it was later pushed back due to construction delays, reports The Sun.

As per the authorities, the delay has also increased the overall cost of the project. As per the estimates, costs for the project have increased to €1.4billion (£1.18billion).

Sybren Hahn, executive director of Schiphol Infrastructure, said: “We are pleased that we can now confidently look ahead to a new completion date.

“The complicated Pier A project clearly went far from smoothly under the previous contractor.

“We will get the keys to the new Pier A in December 2026, after which we’ll conduct operational testing of the new systems and hundreds of colleagues and airport partners will learn how to work in the new environment.”

Robert Carsouw, the airport’s chief financial officer, also disclosed that discussions were underway with airlines regarding new airport fees and investments.

The new facility is projected to be operational by April 2027, with construction expected to be completed by December 2026.
