Surprise Samsung Galaxy phone confirmed that could beat Apple’s exciting new iPhone

Rumours remain rife that Apple is planning to launch a super skinny new smartphone later this year called the iPhone Air. Although the US tech giant always keeps its upcoming gadgets firmly under wraps, experts are certain that a wafer-thin device is on its way from the team in Cupertino with an unveiling expected in September. Now there could be even more urgency to release something new with Apple’s biggest rival showcasing its own lightweight call maker.

During Samsung’s latest Unpacked keynote, the Korean firm surprised us all with news of a Galaxy phone called the S25 Edge. Although full details weren’t disclosed, a short teaser video was shown right at the end of the firm’s S25 launch event with the device slowly being pieced together before the words Galaxy S25 Edge appeared on the screen. This was followed by the company displaying a prototype to excited media at the SAP Centre in San Jose, California.

Express.co.uk was in the crowd at Unpacked and got a first glimpse at the S24 Edge. It’s certainly very slim, especially when placed alongside the new S25 and S25 Ultra which go on sale next month.

Sadly, there was no way to pick it up or test the Edge with Samsung keeping it firmly behind a sheet of glass for now.

Other than its size, the only other feature we could see was a dual-lens rear camera rather than the triple and quad systems found on its fatter siblings.

That’s all we know for now with Samsung not giving any further details on price, specs or a release date.

One thing that does look certain is that S25 Edge could now beat Apple’s next iPhone Air to a global launch.

“Irony for Samsung to end Galaxy Unpacked with a teaser right in Apple’s backyard, akin to there’s one more thing,” said analyst Paolo Pescatore.

“In light of last year’s tease with the Galaxy Ring, which was launched in July of 2024, we should, therefore, expect the Edge to launch within that timeframe.

“All in all, it does very feel like a move to steal Apple’s thunder ahead of its always eagerly anticipated new iPhone.”

If you hate giant phones, watch this space as exciting launches are definitely coming soon.
