Remove bad smells in freezers with 1 teaspoon of common ingredient

A clean and organised freezer is essential for keeping food smelling and tasting fresh and ensuring your appliance runs efficiently. However, even the most well-maintained freezers can develop stubborn odours over time, making it unpleasant to open the door.

From forgotten leftovers to spills and ice build-up, lingering smells can be difficult to get rid of – especially if they seep into other stored items. Fortunately, Iceland’s expert cleaning team has shared a simple yet effective solution to neutralise unwanted freezer odours while also lifting grime.

The key lies in a common kitchen staple that most households already have in their cupboards and can easily be found for as little as 65p in supermarkets like Asda and Tesco.

According to the experts, baking soda is the ultimate freezer freshener. It gets rid of bad odours and leaves the freezer feeling fresher than ever.

Mixing just one tablespoon with water creates a powerful yet gentle cleaning solution that eliminates smells without the need for harsh chemicals.

“A little goes a long way,” said the expert team, who recommend wiping down shelves and walls with this simple mixture to leave your freezer smelling fresh.

In addition to tackling odours, the experts also advise deep-cleaning the freezer by unplugging it, removing expired food, and defrosting any built-up ice.

To speed up the process, they suggest placing a bowl of hot water inside to help loosen stubborn frost.

The experts added: “Taking the time to defrost and clean your freezer properly will not only improve its efficiency but also keep your food fresher for longer.”

To maintain a spotless freezer, Iceland recommends regularly checking the temperature, ensuring it’s set to -18C, and keeping door seals clean using a simple mix of white vinegar and water.

For long-term freshness, they also suggest using airtight containers and clearly labelling food items to prevent waste.

With just a small amount of baking soda and a few extra steps, households can keep their freezers odour-free, well-organised, and running smoothly all year round.
