British drivers at risk of failing MOT due to ‘overlooked’ component found on every car

Britons could fail their annual MOT test for forgetting to look after an “overlooked” component found on a car windscreen.

Wiper blades are vital tools which make sure road users always have a clever vision of the road ahead.

Windscreen wipers are checked at every MOT appointment meaning any slight issue could see motorists fall on the wrong side of an inspection.

According to motoring specialists at Windscreen Wipers, switching the blades is on a lot of motorists’ to-do lists with searches for “windscreen wipers replacement” up 140 percent on last year.

They said: “The importance of having appropriate and working windscreen wipers is often overlooked, but it is key for your safety that you keep them in an acceptable condition.

“After all, not only is it irritating and distracting to have a dirty windscreen when driving, but it can also be unsafe if the dirt is restricting visibility. For this very reason, wipers are inspected in every MOT.

“If your wipers are deemed to be working insufficiently, and therefore not road safe, you could fail your MOT, potentially incurring more costs in the long term.

“We suggest checking your wipers regularly for signs of any damage like cracks or breaks in the rubber, bending to the blade itself, or a squeaky noise coming from them while in use.”

An MOT test is a legal requirement to drive a vehicle on the road in the UK with cars under 40 years old having to be tested every year.

They warn that skipping blades usually indicate the part is bent and a clear indicator they need to be replaced.

Experts at Windscreen Wipers also revealed blades would typically last between six months and a year.

They added: “It’s also important to ensure you’re buying the right wiper blades for your car, so they fit and work efficiently. Make sure to do your research or speak to experts about the suitable blades for your motor’s make and model.”
